FOREWARD: In this fourth volume of the series, we continue to bring to the practitioner in pediatrics some of the year's highlights in an advancing field of medicine. We include, as before, a chapter on a developing area in basic biologic science; this year's selection is homeostatic regulation of body fluids, electrolytes, and acid-base.
Hardly "new", the concept of physiologic homeostasis had its beginning over a century ago in Claude Bernard's formulation: biologic integrity requires maintenance of a constant internal environment. But in its application to clinical medicine, particularly pediatrics, the subject is ever new.
Chapters include:
- Homeostasis Regulation; Body Fluids, Electrolyte, and Acid-Base
- Steroids: Uses, hazards and Cautions in Pediatric Therapy
- Highlights in Hematology
- Antiviral Agents
- The Child With a Hearing Problem
- Dental Problems
- Miscellany in Brief
