Abortion raises subtle problems for private conscience, public policy, and constitutional law. Most of these problems are essentially philosophical, requiring a degree of clarity about basic concepts that is seldom achieved in legislative debates and letters to newspapers. Most of the philosophical essays in this collection deal primarily with questions concerning the moral justifiably of abortion, and only indirectly with questions of a legal or constitutional nature. The former questions can be divided into two groups: those concerned with problems about the moral status of the unborn and those concerned with the resolution of conflicting claims.
