Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ, published in 1880 by Lew Wallace, is a historical novel that intertwines the fictional life of Judah Ben-Hur with the biblical story of Jesus Christ.  Set in the first century, the narrative follows a wealthy Jewish prince who is falsely accused of attempting to assassinate a Roman governor and sentenced to slavery in the galleys.

The story traces Judah’s journey from a man consumed by revenge against his childhood friend, the Roman tribune Messala, to a believer in Christianity.  Key events include a dramatic chariot race where Judah defeats Messala, the tragic imprisonment of his mother and sister in leprosy, and his eventual spiritual transformation after witnessing the Crucifixion.

Major themes include redemption, forgiveness, and the contrast between earthly vengeance and spiritual love.  The novel concludes with Judah converting to Christianity and using his wealth to support the early Christian community in Rome, specifically by funding the construction of the Catacombs of Callixtus.
