The Union forces were taking a beating and orders came for retreat. Colonel Brubaker and his troops abandoned their position, but Captain McCracken mistook the retreat order and held his ground. McCracken's men ended up routing the Confederates, making Brubaker look like a fool. The paths of the two men will once more cross at an outpost in Sioux country.
