There was great excitement in the third-grade room when Jerry, the "new boy," brought his little speckled hen to school. The janitor made a pen for Speckles; the teacher brought thirteen brown eggs for her to sit on; the children fed and watched her.
After three long weeks a bunch of fluffy chicks stood among broken eggshells. Happily the children touched their soft down. Jerry beamed. He was not the "new boy" any longer. Speckles and her chicks had brought him friends.
This pleasant and informative story is a very satisfying one for younger children. And its many pictures, short sentences and familiar words make it an ideal book for beginning readers.
