Wilson's Creek: On the 25th of July, newly-appointed Major-General John Charles Fremont, the third-ranking officer in the Union Army (behind Winfield Scott and Henry Halleck), arrived in St. Louis to take military command of the Union's Department of the West. The recently-formed area included Illinois and all states and territories west of the Mississippi as far as New Mexico.
