The Hash Knife Outfit is about a feud between two cattle outfits, the law-abiding Diamond and the outlaw Hash Knife gang, in early Arizona. The story follows the Hash Knife outlaws as they rustle cattle and kidnap women, leading to gunfights, ambushes, and a showdown, with the gang eventually going straight after being reduced to a single member. It is a sequel to Grey's novel The Drift Fence.
