To describe Uncomfortable Words as essentially a book of personal religion might give the impression that it was intended to affect only the purely private side of life; such an innocuously limited aim, however, is far from characteristic of the Archbishop of Cape Town and the effect of this book could easily be startling as well as edifying. For in choosing for his subject the uncomfortable words of Jesus, the author is disturbingly successful in laying bare their razor-sharp cutting edge, which familiarity may seem to have blunted.
